Learning the Runes - Hagal

This is the second in a series of three discussions on learning runes - today it's about Hagal's runes

These eight of Hagal's are about intellect, understanding and spiritual growth.  It is often called the Mother of the Runes since it encompasses the entire universe in the process of creation.  This group of eight runes are:  Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perth, Algiz and Sowelu.

The only 'power' rune in this group of eight is Hagalaz.  It is significant when pulled up in a reading.

For now, here's a brief summary of each of the Hagal Runes...
Hagalaz is about disruption, hail, sleet, or any natural forces that damage (think floods, tornados for instance)
Nauthiz is about constraint, need, necessity, causes of human sorrow, lessons, hardship
Isa is about standstill, ice, freezing
Jera is about harvest, the term of a year, a fruitful part of the year
Eihwaz is about defense, a Yew tree, a bow made of Yew, avertive powers, runic calendars or primstaves
Perth is about initiation, uncertain meaning, a secret matter
Algiz is about protection, the elk, sedge or eelgrass
Sowelu is about wholeness, the sun, life force or victory

As with the first group of eight runes, perhaps put these on flash cards.  Get to know the basic meanings.

Stay tuned for the next eight...
